What is the Doctrine of Sonship?

June 13, 2018

This is the doctrine of sonship, as it so far stands. It is part of our soon-to-be-released 170-page confession of faith which will be the spearhead of an entirely new initiative within the Church. Stay tuned.

I. Men and women are regenerated as sons and daughters of God by the same faith of Abraham and Sarah[1] and become part of Christ’s Family as a child receives a gift, without claim of merit or paying any price.[2]

II. Through the Spirit of huiothesia, meaning sonship, men are received and glorified to take after Christ’s own image as Son of God,[3] who is called the firstborn among many brothers.[4] The glory of sonship manifests in such actions as taking responsibility for outcomes,[5] receiving fatherly discipline,[6] provision for his family,[7] leadership,[8] protection,[9] showing brotherly love,[10] the ministry of the Word,[11] and overcoming evil.[12]

III. These sons, under the headship of Christ, are to practice reverence toward older men as they would a father, and to bring glory to women as wives, mothers, and sisters through love, provision, security, teaching, purity, honor, and understanding.[13]

IV. God’s Spirit transforms men and women from their old corrupted identity as spiritual orphans,[14] to a new holy identity as sons and daughters of God and redeems the corrupted relationship between Adam and Eve at the fall, freeing them to enjoy the glories of a new, holy relationship between one another as brothers and sisters of the Kingdom.[15]

V. Although wives submit to husbands in everything,[16] both men and women enjoy the liberties and privileges of being the children of God,[17]
have His name put upon them,[18] have access to the throne of grace with boldness,[19] are pitied,[20] protected,[21] provided for,[22] yet never cast off,[23] but sealed to the day of redemption.[24] Both men and women inherit the promises,[25] as heirs of everlasting salvation.[26]

[1] ISA 51:2 Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but one when I called him, that I might bless him and multiply him. 2 COR 6:18 and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty. GAL 3:7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. GAL 4:21 ell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. 24 Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 1 PET 3:6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

[2] LUK 18:17 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

[3] ROM 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of [huiothesia], by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 8:23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for [huiothesia], the redemption of our bodies. 9:4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the [huiothesia], the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. EPH 1:5 he predestined us for [huiothesia] through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will GAL 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive [huiothesia].

[4] ROM 8:29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

[5] GAL 6:4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5 For each will have to bear his own load. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 1 COR 13:11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 1 COR 16:13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 2 COR 9:6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 1 TIM 2:8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; EPH 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. COL 3:21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. 1 PET 3:7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. JOB 4:8 As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same. PSA 7:15 He makes a pit, digging it out, and falls into the hole that he has made.

[6] DEU 8:5 Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you. PRO 15:5 A fool rejects his father’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction is prudent. PRO 13:24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. HEB 12:5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises everyone He receives as a son.” 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?

[7] 1 TIM 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. JAM 2:15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?

[8] 1 COR 11:3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. EPH 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor

[9] NEH 4:14 And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.”

[10] HEB 13:1 Let brotherly love continue. ROM 12:10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 1 PET 1:22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart 1 THES 5:25 Brothers, pray for us. 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

[11] PRO 4:1 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, 2 for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching. 3 When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, 4 he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. ISA 38:19 the father makes known to the children your faithfulness. EPH 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. 1 TIM 3:2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach ACT 6:4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 9 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen. 10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.

[12] GEN 4:6 The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.” 1 JOH 2:4 I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 2 COR 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete. 1 COR 5:13 God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.” TIT 1:10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. 11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith

[13] 1 COR 11:3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. 7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. EPH 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 1 TIM 5:1 Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity. 1 PET 3:7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

[14] LAM 5:3 We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. HOS 14:3 Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride on horses; and we will say no more, ‘Our God,’ to the work of our hands. In you the orphan finds mercy. JER 3:19 “‘I said, How I would set you among my sons, and give you a pleasant land, a heritage most beautiful of all nations. And I thought you would call me, My Father, and would not turn from following me.”

[15] ROM 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. JOH 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. ROM 6:18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

[16] EPH 5:24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

[17] ROM 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. JOH 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.

[18] JER 14:9 Why should you be like a man confused, like a mighty warrior who cannot save? Yet you, O LORD, are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name; do not leave us.” 2CO 6:18 and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty. REV 3:12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.

[19] EPH 3:12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. ROM 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

[20] PSA 103:13 As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him.

[21] PRO 14:26 In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge.

[22] MAT 6:30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 1PE 5:7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

[23] LAM 3:31 For the Lord will not cast off forever

[24] EPH 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

[25] HEB 6:12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

[26] 1PE 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, HEB 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?
