I did some research into suicide statistics and came up with the following graphs. All data is taken from WISQARS found at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website.
Boys kill themselves significantly more than girls, nearly 4 to 1. This ratio holds true regardless of age. Yet, suicide at a young age is a particularly hard to understand phenomenon when there is yet “so much life ahead of them.”
The Native American community is particularly suffering from male suicide.
Is there something we’re missing with our boys? Something we have overlooked that is manifesting in such an awful way? Is there something our boys are crying out for that we’re not listening to? How are these boys so quickly convinced that life—not even two decades into it—is not worth living? Dad?
