According to Wired Magazine, 80% of working men believe that personal appearance influences success.
According to God,
“Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
David was chosen to be a leader of a nation based on his heart even though he would say “I am a poor man and have no reputation”. (1 Samuel 18:23)
Centuries later, Jesus steps on to the scene and revives again the ancient teaching:
“Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” (John 7:24)
The foolishness of judging the wrong way can be a really bad thing, for example:
“Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceitfully; with his mouth each speaks peace to his neighbor, but in his heart he plans an ambush for him.” (Jeremiah 9:8)
Jesus again teaches on this principle:
“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45)
A person’s image can be a production of a good heart or a wicked heart. It’s hard to tell the difference because they will often sound and look the same. Therefore be discerning and wise, praying. And God will open our eyes by his spirit to see people for who they really are.
“But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.” (1 Corinthians 14:24-25)
