Joseph Benson in 1854 interpreted this in the way most commentators do, “that is, such a man as will fulfil all the desires of his heart, and not oppose, them as thou dost.”
It was thought that “after God’s heart” meant some man inclined toward God’s heart which isn’t necessarily incorrect but the Hebrew says more literally “man like his heart”.
